As immigrants and teachers ourselves we're driven by a passion to ensure no student is left behind because of their language skills. Children who can't communicate with their peers and staff struggle both academically and socially. We're big believers in the power and selfless work of bilingual educators and interpreters, but nobody can be everywhere at once.
That's why we designed the Moonshine Translator tablet - to give all teachers an easy way to reach every student, any time, anywhere, with no delay. We built it to solve the problems we've seen for ourselves.
Lack of Time
We know the last thing you need as a busy teacher is more technology that takes away from your teaching time, so the tablet works as soon as you open the box, with no account or wifi passwords needed. Moonshine Translator comes with a large screen and simple interface dedicated to student/teacher conversations, so no training is required to start using it, just press the button and speak.
Lack of Money
As a teacher you're always expected to do more with less, so our translators are built with the financial realities of schools in mind. We don't charge any usage fees, or require a subscription, you simply buy the device and then use it forever. It doesn't matter how many conversations you have, you'll never pay a penny more.
Vulnerable Students
Moonshine does everything locally on the device, with no internet connection. This means all student conversations are literally kept in your hands, which ensures full FERPA compliance. It also means you can use it anywhere in the world, as easily as you can in your classroom, for everything from PTA meetings to field trips or even international exchange programs.
Speaker Availability
You may be able to find people in the building who can speak Spanish to offer informal assistance, but it gets much harder once you move beyond the two or three most popular languages. With fourteen supported (including Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Ukrainian, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Russian, Italian, French, Arabic, German, and Dutch) Moonshine can help you reach a much wider spectrum of learners.
Unfair Student Burden
Bilingual students are often asked to translate for other children, staff, and even parents at conferences to discuss the learner's own progress! This takes away time from their own education and can force them to take on mature responsibilities too early, since they'll often be helping adults negotiate complex systems and deal with sensitive topics. By removing the necessity for the students to translate in many of these situations, the tablet can free them up to be kids.
How it Works
Moonshine has been designed with education in mind.
Simple Interface
No training is needed to use Moonshine. It's easy for students and teachers to use and understand, just press the button and talk. As you speak, the translations appears on screen, just like text messages. The translation is also spoken, for students who find that more accessible. Learners see and hear the translation, and then respond naturally in their own language, allowing fluent conversations.
Large Screen and Projector Display
You can provide instant translation to a whole classroom by plugging an HDMI cable into the device. It supplies realtime closed captions as you talk, so you can help many students at once.
Data Security
Moonshine can never send your data to the cloud because all devices ship with Wifi, Bluetooth, and cellular connectivity disabled. It works entirely offline, so you can be sure you and your students' conversations are safe, and held in full compliance with FERPA.
Optional Conversation Saving
You can choose to save conversations to your own USB drive, so you can review them later. Moonshine uses industry-leading encryption to keep your data safe.
